About google analytics
Google Analytics is a web analytics service that provides statistics and basic analytical tools for search engine optimization (SEO) and marketing purposes. The service is part of the Google Marketing Platform and is available for free to anyone with a Google account.
Google Analytics gives you the free tools you need to centrally analyze data for your business. This allows you to make smarter decisions.
Step 1: create a Google account
You need a Google account to use Google Analytics. If you already use Google products, such as Gmail or Ads, you can use the same account for Google Analytics.
If you don’t have a Google account for other products, you can create one here.
Step 2: create a Google analytics account
Once you have a Google account, you must create an Analytics account with the following steps here.
Step 3: Enable Google Analytics
To enable Google Analytics, you must create a Universal Analytics property in Google and add it to your Shopify store.
- Open Google Analytics in a web browser.
- Click on Admin.
- In the Account column, select the correct account.
- In the Property column, click Create Property.
- Enter a name for the property.
- Select Create Universal Analytics Property Only.
- Click Next.
- Select the appropriate settings.
- Click Create.
- Copy the property code
- In a new tab in your browser, open your Shopify admin interface
- Go to Online Store > Preferences
- In the Google Analytics section, paste your code UA-xxxxxxxxx-x property into the Google Analytics Account field and paste the JavaScript code into the Additional Google Analytics JavaScript field.
Step 4: Enable e-commerce tracking
Enable basic e-commerce tracking
In your Google Analytics account, click Admin.
In the View column, click E-commerce Settings.
Click the Enable E-commerce toggle button to change it from OFF to ON.
Enable enhanced e-commerce tracking
From your Shopify admin interface, go to Online Store puis Preferences.
In the Google Analytics section, click the Use Enhanced e-commerce checkbox. If you are using an older version of Google Analytics, you may need to click Update to the latest version before you can check the Use Enhanced E-commerce box.
Click Save. This allows Shopify to track and send all your website data to Google Analytics.
In your Google Analytics account, click Admin.
In the View column, click E-commerce Settings.
Click the Enable Enhanced e-commerce Reporting toggle button to switch from OFF to ON.
Click Save.
